  •  I-25 runs north-south through the state, roughly from the New Mexico border, through Colorado Springs, Denver, and up toward Wyoming.
    • I-70 is very important: crosses the state east-west, goes through the mountains, connects Denver with mountain resort areas and with Utah on the west and Kansas to the east.

    • I-76 branches off northeast from Denver toward the Nebraska border.

  • U.S. Highways: There are many: U.S. Route 40, US 50, US 285, US 287, US 550, etc. These often serve regions not directly served by interstates and help tie together rural areas, mountain passes, smaller towns.

  • State Highways: Colorado has 205 active state‐numbered highways. Some are very short, some traverse long ranges and rugged terrain.

  • General type: Much of eastern Colorado (the plains) is semi-arid. Mountains get alpine climates.

  • Temperature variation: Big daily and seasonal temperature swings, especially in areas far from mountains or at lower elevations. Warm summers, cold winters.

  • Precipitation: Relatively low in many areas; more rain/snow in mountain regions. Snow is a big part of winter climate, especially in higher elevations. Snowpack is critical for water.

  • Climate change effects: Warming trends are being observed. Earlier snowmelt, increased risk of drought and wildfires. More extreme heat events.

  • Seasonal weather highlights:

    • Winter: Snow, especially in mountain passes, cold nights. Some highways may close in mountain zones due to snow.

    • Summer: Warm to hot in the plains; mountain areas are cooler. Afternoon thunderstorms more common in summer in many areas.
